Managing Behavior!

10 Tips to help you in managing behavior with your parent.    Caregiving can be very trying, so hopefully these will help you.

# 1 Suppose you could find the CAUSES

   Some medications.

   When they get frustrated.

   When they are tired.

When there is conflict with family or friend.

   When they want attention.

# 2 When was the last time INCONTINENCE was a problem

Put a portable commode by their bed at night.

# 3 Imagine how REPEATING has an effect on you

I'm learning not to discuss plans until immediately prior to the event.

Do not constantly remind them they are repeating themselves.

# 4 When was the last time they became AGITATED

Check to see if medications could be causing side effects.

Check for a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection).

Distract them with a snack or television program.

# 5 Suppose you could help with the PARANOIA

DON'T argue...which can be hard to do.

Explain to family members that the suspicious accusation are a part of    the illness.

Let the doctor or nurses know about the paranoia.

If they accuse you of losing their items, just help them look for it and    then try to comfort them if the item is not found.
This is not always easy to do)

# 6 What would it be like if they SLEEP like a baby

Keep curtains closed to shut out darkness.

Use medications as the last resort.

# 7 What would it be like the next time if you could help with their          CONFUSION

   Keep a calendar nearby.

It would be helpful to get a clock that has the time, day and year and if    available the temperature.

Photos and old letters seem to be a sense of security.

# 8 Suppose you could stop the TRIGGERS

Avoid lots of people visiting at one time.

Having a routine will help keep stress down.

# 9 How would you like to COMMUNICATE better

Try not to talk negative...it's wrong to say "don't go outside" instead try    saying "stay inside".

Try to use eye contact as much as possible.Encourage your loved one    to talk about past experiences growing up, familiar places and things,    etc.

#10 Imagine CONVENIENCE

Provide a table beside their chair with a little storage where they have    access to a few of their most wanted things.

Watch for more help on managing behavior on this site in the future days to provide better care for your elderly parent.

Please be patient with them which I know can be very hard and try to have an open mind.

Make it a great day!
